GWA were engaged by UTS to relocate UTS International & Advancement, CRC and CLG & shared staff meeting spaces into Building 1, following the vacation of the Faculty of Engineering and IT from the building.
Constructed in the early 70’s, Building 1 is a significant work of mid-century modernism, where structural expressionism along with robust and natural finishes are central to the architecture. The refurbishment strategy was to gather rooms around the central core; create open plan workspaces to the perimeter, and re‑expose the building structure.

The design is flexible and adaptable to accommodate future changes whilst providing opportunities for expansion and contraction of staff numbers in line with changing demand. Communal areas are designed to be generous in size and easily opened up for larger groups and social gatherings.

The fitout offers a welcoming, contemporary, prestigious, flexible and innovative environment in an open plan format with a small number of offices, meeting rooms and other ancillary spaces.

Vistas from the lift lobby exploit North and South views and bring increased natural light. The workspace is therefore bright, open, transparent and dynamic, which encourages interaction and collaboration.

The selection of natural finishes gave each floor an identity of its own. Natural toned timbers, in refined textures for level 20 and rustic for level 21, copper tones and concrete helped to create a welcoming work environment while making reference to the building’s original Brutalist aesthetic.
